Walkerswood
Caribbean Foods is the sort of enterprise that deserves the
support of all of us. The story goes back to early 70's Jamaica
when rural areas were seeing an exodus of people, particularly
younger people, moving to the cities to find work. As is local
tradition, going back to the original 'Pioneer Club', the
community got together and decided to do something about it;
creating work
opportunities locally. So started a business preparing and
cooking food for local restaurants, their marinades proved
such a success that by 1978 they were bottling them and selling
them throughout Jamaica. Their fortunes took a turn when an
American tourist, seeing how popular the sauces were and liking
them himself, started importing the sauces into the US. By
now the company had an established facility at Ocho Rios in
the hills of St Ann, in the north of Jamaica, but despite
its growth to international stardom was remaining true to
its roots, operating as a community, for the community.
Using local ingredients is key to the operation and spirit
of the enterprise; for example Walkerswood estimate that their
jerk sauce is 98% Jamaican.
Local farmers supply much of the raw materials and where necessary
to ensure continuity of supply (extreme weather can be a feature
of the island!) Walkerswood have setup their own farms within
Jamaica that employ locals to that area.
In late 2007 it became known that Walkerswood were in financial
difficulties, in fact the situation was so serious that the
company were essentially bankrupted and new investors were
sought. Happily for the company and many of their employees
a consortium was finally put together in 2009 to take-over
the ailing organisation and provide substantial investment
- according to the story below all seems to be going well...
